Bitcoin Benefits

§ Verify · OpenTimestamps

If you don't know where you're going, you might end up someplace else.

Anchor a document to a Bitcoin block and verify it later — proof that something existed, in this exact form, on a particular date. Hash-only; the document itself never leaves your machine.

Create a Timestamp

1.Get your file ready

Any file works. Documents, photos, code — doesn't matter.

2.Go to opentimestamps.org

It's free and runs in your browser.

3.Drop your file on the page

Or click to browse for it.

4.Download the .ots proof

Small file, usually under 1KB.

5.Keep both files together

Store them in the same folder.

Verify a Timestamp

1.Find both your files

Original and .ots proof file.

2.Visit opentimestamps.org

Click the Verify tab.

3.Upload both files

Original first, then the proof.

4.Check the results

A positive signal means verified.

What's a Timestamp?

A timestamp proves your file existed at a specific time. It's like a digital notary stamp that can't be faked. Only the file's fingerprint goes on Bitcoin's ledger.

Why It Matters

  • Legal proof — show when contracts were signed
  • IP protection — prove when you created something
  • Audit trails — track document versions

Pro Tips

  • Timestamp emails as .txt files first
  • Zip multiple files and timestamp the archive
  • Back up .ots files separately
